Twitter To Come Up With Stringent Norms For Political Advertisements

Twitter has announced stricter enforcement of norms related to political ads in countries including India, Australia and all European Union member states. The microblogging site has received a lot of backlash in India after its CEO Jack Dorsey flouted government summons to be a part of Parliamentary hearing on safeguarding citizen rights on social media platforms.

Twitter in may 2018 rolled out its Political Campaigning Policy in the United States to define a clear insight as to how the platform describes political content and the individual who is advertising political content on Twitter.

Following this, the platform unveiled Ads Transparency Center (ATC). The centre enables anyone from across the globe to view advertisements on Twitter with details on political campaigning advertisements. The centre also enables anyone to view advertisements that have run on Twitter within the last week from any twitter account.

If an ad is reported and taken down from Twitter, it will be archived in the Ads Transparency Center within approximately 24 hours. If the account was suspended, Tweets will not be shown in the Ads Transparency Center. The same applies to deleted Twitter accounts and Tweets.

Twitter will also share the details of the organisations will advertise political campaign content on the platform by putting forth disclaimer information on promotional content. This will enable users in easily identifying the campaign ads and those who paid for them. The policy will come into effect from March 11 this year.
