1 in 5 Urban Indians Show Early Heart Risk, 25% Face Respiratory Threat: CoverSure Health Risk Index

CoverSure Index Puts India’s Health Risk Score at 36.6

Mumbai, March 27, 2026 : 25% of urban Indians show heightened respiratory health vulnerability, while 1 in 5 display early cardiovascular risk indicators, according to findings from CoverRisk, CoverSure’s AI-powered health risk tracking platform.Based on data collected over the last six months from nearly 50,000 individuals across 35 states and union territories, the CoverSure Health Risk Index assigns India’s urban population a composite health risk score of 36.6 on a scale of 0 to 100, with higher scores indicating greater overall risk exposure.

The index is built on a range of everyday lifestyle and environmental factors, including air quality, commute duration, BMI, blood pressure, sleep patterns, and sedentary behaviour. Together, these inputs offer a view of how modern urban living is shaping long-term health risk.

What sets this assessment apart is its focus on daily, cumulative stressors that often go unnoticed until they begin to affect health outcomes. From worsening air quality and long commute hours to sedentary routines, industrial exposure, and underlying physiological indicators, the index captures how these factors combine to influence risk over time. At a time when healthcare costs are rising and access to advanced treatment is becoming more expensive, early risk awareness is becoming increasingly important from both a health and financial planning perspective.

Data from the index indicates that respiratory risk remains widespread across major Indian cities, driven by prolonged exposure to poor air quality and recurring seasonal infections, including among younger age groups. Cardiovascular risk is rising steadily, closely linked to inactivity, lifestyle stress, and sleep patterns. 40% of individuals assessed were classified as overweight or obese (BMI >25), a factor associated with higher susceptibility to conditions such as diabetes and hypertension at earlier stages of life.

Lifestyle patterns appear to be reinforcing these risks. 67% of respondents reported no regular physical activity, reflecting declining fitness levels among working adults and students alike. 55% reported sleeping fewer than six hours per night, while over 40% of metro-based individuals spend more than three hours a day commuting, limiting time for consistent routines related to rest and exercise.

Among young adults aged 18–25, the assessment highlights early risk behaviours. 33% reported smoking between three and ten cigarettes per day, indicating that tobacco exposure is beginning early. Several individuals in this age group already show borderline blood pressure levels, fluctuating cholesterol, and early signs of pre-hypertension, suggesting that lifestyle-linked risk accumulation is starting sooner than commonly assumed. The findings also reflect India’s continued vulnerability to tuberculosis, with 33% of respondents identifying TB among their top perceived health risks, consistent with global data that places India among the countries with the highest TB burden.

Commenting on the findings, Saurabh Vijayvergia, Founder and CEO of CoverSure, said, “At CoverSure, we have been building consumer-first solutions for greater control over personalised risks, and as we are all growing fastest in the world, our protection doesn’t lag behind.  Our engine has been tested in a robust manner with over 50,000 user-generated data points across all age-groups and every single state / UT of India.  In reality, our risks are dynamic and evolve with lifestyle, environment, age, and behaviour, but this has largely been ignored in general awareness & definitely in insurance decision-making. When individuals understand how their risk profile changes over time, insurance shifts from a blind renewal to a customized financial safeguard that adapts with life.”

The assessment reinforces that health risk is rarely driven by a single factor. Instead, it is the cumulative effect of lifestyle habits, environment, family history, and behavioral patterns that evolves over time. As these risks increasingly influence healthcare needs and costs, understanding individual risk profiles is becoming a more relevant input into long-term health planning and insurance decisions.

Insights from the CoverRisk Health Risk Index are based on assessments from ~50,000 individuals across 35 states and managed dynamically by CoverSure. The tool evaluates lifestyle indicators, environmental exposure, family history, and select health parameters to generate a composite risk score on a scale of 0 to 100, with higher scores indicating elevated health risk.
