Spotify Rolls Out Its India Operations

Music streaming service provider Spotify has incepted its India operations after a court denied the objections raised by Warner Music regarding the company’s entry in the country. The High Court of Bombay directed Spotify to deposit INR 6.5 crore and gave a green signal to the service provider to roll out its operations in the country.

Warner Music earlier filed a directive to abstain the Swedish company from offering its songs in India.

The service was rolled out on Tuesday via the company’s web and mobile applications for existing as well as new users. Spotify has rolled out the ability for free subscribers to listen to songs on demand.

The company at present is claiming to offer 40 million plus songs from its playlist touching 3 billion. The premium subscription of the company also offers features like offline playback and playing of songs on connected devices like speakers and televisions. The service is available via subscriptions and prepaid plans.

Spotify’s monthly subscriptions are priced at INR 119, while the yearly subscription of the company is available at INR 1,189. The company’s special student plan includes a 50 per cent discount on monthly plans. Prepaid plans are available in the range of INR 13 for a day, INR 39 for a week and INR 129 for a month.

“We’re pleased with today’s outcome. It ensures songwriters, artists, labels and publishers benefit from the financial opportunity of the Indian market and that consumers will enjoy an excellent Spotify experience. As we’ve said all along, we’re hopeful for a negotiated solution with Warner based on market rates,” said a Spotify spokesperson to Economic Times Tech.
