Over 3.6 Lakh Individuals Had At least One Background Check Fail in FY 2024–25: OnGrid

~ More than 25,000 profiles flagged with half or more checks failing ~

India| 27th June 2025: New data from OnGrid, one of India’s largest digital background verification platforms, reveals a growing pattern of discrepancies in employment background checks. As per its annual verification report for FY 2024–25, 3,67,542 individuals were found to have at least one verification check fail.

These profiles were part of a total of 50,86,984 verifications processed by OnGrid during the year. Each underwent at least five independent checks, including identity, employment history, education, address, criminal records, and other key ones.

Going deeper, 25,831 individuals were flagged with 50 percent or more of their verification checks failing, indicating repeated or serious gaps in their declared credentials.

The data points to more than just isolated mismatches. It signals patterns of misrepresentation, incomplete disclosure, and in some cases, document fraud. For HR, compliance, and risk teams, these patterns serve as early warning signals that demand closer investigation.

“One failed verification might be an anomaly, but multiple failed checks on the same profile change the narrative entirely,” said Piyush Peshwani, Co-founder and CEO of OnGrid. “It’s a clear indicator of risk, and businesses need systems capable of detecting these signals before it’s too late.”

This insight comes at a time when businesses are increasingly relying on remote hiring, flexible contracts, and third-party staffing. In such an environment, robust background verification processes serve as the first line of defense not just against bad hires, but against larger compliance and operational risks.

The report underscores how background verification has shifted from being a formality to becoming a critical governance and risk management tool.

“Verification in 2025 is about connecting data, identifying patterns, and helping employers build trust at scale,” Peshwani added.

OnGrid works with leading employers across sectors including BFSI, healthcare, IT, logistics, and retail. As workforce models grow more complex, the risks of incomplete or inaccurate background checks could increasingly translate into larger business risks. For employers, the challenge is not just whether to verify but how intelligently and how early.
