Software giant SAP has agreed on storing data of its Indian clients on local servers which the firm will either set up by itself or will collaborate with other firms.
The Germany headquartered firm offers its solutions to 10,200 plus customers in India itself. The decision to store data in India comes in line with India’s revised policy which states that crucial personal data of Indians held by global firms be stored and processed locally.
“We find ways and opportunities that we can keep the data of the Indian customers also here in the country,” said Christian Klein, COO, SAP.
“No matter if there is not yet a final decision (on the law), but we are creating infrastructure in India that allows us to really react in a very flexible way to any potential new data privacy rules,’’ added Klein
Klein also comes as an executive board member of SAP and states that while SAP’s policy includes that data is owned by customers, It is open to adhere to the prevailing data protection law in India.
SAP is evaluating the options for either setting up its own infrastructure or collaborate with partners in India, said the company.
“Our customers are on a wait-and-watch mode. It is on the top of the mind of the people, but I don’t think anybody knows clearly what happens,” said Dilipkumar Khandelwal, managing director of SAP Labs India.
